CID seeks Kolkata Police help in Garden Reach investigation

Top-level CID officials today held a meeting with Joint Commissioner (Crime) Pallab Kanti Ghosh and other officials of Kolkata Police and sought their assistance to investigate the Garden Reach incident of February 12.

Sub-inspector Tapas Choudhury was shot dead during a clash in Garden Reach by goons who reportedly owe allegiance to Trinamool Congress leaders. The area falls under Kolkata Police and the agency has detailed information about the activities of criminals and goons there. Kolkata Police began to probe the incident but it was suddenly handed over to the CID on February 14 on the instructions of the chief minister, said a CID official.

After today's hour-long discussion at Bhawani Bhawan, the state police headquarters, Ghosh said, "We had a meeting with CID officials today. The meeting was held for better coordination regarding the investigation."

The meeting was also attended by Sibaji Ghosh, ADG CID, DC (Port) V Solomon and two other Kolkata Police officers who were initially involved in the investigation.

A CID official said they had requested the Kolkata Police to share the findings of the investigation carried out by the detective department and information regarding the activities of Mohammad Iqbal (Trinamool leader and chairman of Borough 15) and Congress leader Mokhtar, both of whom are named in the FIR.

After taking over the probe, the CID arrested three close associates of Iqbal from Raina in Burdwan on February 15 night with the assistance of Garden Reach police station, said a source. A total of 17 persons have been arrested in connection with the two FIRs, one for rioting and another for killing Tapas Choudhury.

Of the 17, Igne and Suhan were arrested by Kolkata Police on charges of killing Choudhury. They were handed over to the CID.

On Friday the CID took custody of Tahir Hussain, who was injured in the incident, and also arrested Abdul Rukman, close to Mokhtar. They were produced in court today.
