city anchor: All other grilling techniques fail, CBI looks at psychoanalysis tests

After sustained interrogation and polygraphy tests, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is contemplating subjecting three Urban Development Department (UDD) officials — who are accused in the Adarsh society missing papers case — to psychoanalysis tests.

UDD Desk Officer Gurudatt Wajpe, Assistant Town Planner Nandkumar Narvekar and Waman Rawool, then clerk to UDD Principal Secretary have been accused of misplacing a few important file notings from the department that were crucial in the Adarsh society scam.

With the help of a psychologist from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory in New Delhi, the agency plans to conduct psychoanalysis tests on the three. "They have not revealed anything in particular. Polygraph test also did not yield anything consequential. Once we receive a nod from the headquarters in New Delhi, we will summon them for tests," said a senior CBI official.

As part of the psycho-analysis test, the officials would be asked questions in the presence of a psychologist, and every move and behaviour would be monitored. "The experts are trained to read the subject. Although not full-proof, this test — adopted by the CBI only in the recent past — has proved to be extremely effective," said an official. He added that like polygraph and narco-analysis, this test would also not be admissible in court but will aid the investigation.

Under pressure, the CBI had arrested the trio last May. Along with the main Adarsh society scam involving over 15 accused, including former CM Ashok Chavan, Army officials and bureaucrats, the missing papers case was also handed over to the CBI.

Although the CBI acted upon the missing papers case before the main Adarsh case, it has not filed any chargesheet yet. In fact, all three persons were let off on bail on completion of 60 days in custody under one of the mandatory provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
