The City Beautiful has received the distinction of being at the top in the areas of water supply and waste water management effective sewerage drainage system. The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation received two first prizes at a function held by the Ministry of Urban Development and Ministry of Urban Poverty of India.
The function Urban Mobility India, 2008 — a national conference on JNNURM, was organised on the third Anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.
S Jaipal Reddy, Union Minister for Urban Development, was the Chief Guest of the occasion.
The awards were received by Mayor Pardeep Chhabra and Municipal Commissioner Dr Roshan Sunkaria.
Chandigarh has the highest per capita quantum of water produced in the country at 332 litres per capita per day. Water is supplied to households from 16 to 19 hours daily in urban sectors and 8 to 10 hours in colonies and villages. The city has 100 per cent coverage with direct water supply connections of which 78 per cent are metered.
The cost recovery in water supply is 73 per cent. The MC has also undertaken a project of atomisation of water supply system under the JNNURM. The project consists of providing supervisory control and data acquisition of all water works and tubewells by installing surveillance system, electromagnetic flow meters, sluice valves with actuators, depth sensors, pressure indicators compatible with GSM-based software at an estimated cost of Rs.20.26 crore. The project is likely to be completed by December next year.
