There was no respite from heat for Mumbaikars on Thursday as the temperature hovered around 40°Celsius. In South Mumbai,however,the temperature dipped to 38.4°C. Santacruz recorded a maximum of 41°Celsius.
On Thursday,heat waves from north and north-eastern parts continued to hit the city. The sea breeze which blows from the Arabian Sea and arrests the temperature set in much later and the temperatures remained high, said R V Sharma,Deputy Director General of India Meteorological Department(IMD).
According to IMD,the Santacruz weather station recorded a maximum temperature of 41°C and a minimum of 21°C. The Colaba weather station recorded a maximum temperature of 38.4°Celsius and a minimum of 23.4°Celsius.
Wednesday night and Thursday morning were also warmer than average days. According to data,suburbs recorded a minimum temperature of 21 degree while the island city recorded 23.4 degree celsius.
According to Dr G T Ambe,executive health officer,Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC),With the weather getting hotter and dry people should drink lots of water. With the mercury expected to rise in the coming months,people should carry umbrellas and avoid eating out.
According to IMD officials,there will not be much respite from soaring temperatures for the next 48 hours. IMD has predicted a maximum temperature of 39°Celsius and a low of 21°Celsius in the next 48 hours.
The weather department had recorded a record high temperature of 41.6 °C at the Colaba weather station on Wednesday while the Santacruz weather station recorded a high temperature of 41.3 °C,making it the hottest day in the past 55 years. Previously,the Colaba weather staition had recorded a temperture of 40.4 °C in 1981,while Santacruz weather station had recorded a high of 41.7°C in 1956.
