Pawan Bansal to be honoured for getting Railways portfolio

Chandigarh:A function to felicitate Union Minister Pawan Bansal will be organised at Tagore Theatre on Saturday. Members of more than 50 associations including resident, religious, social organizations will be honouring the minister for being given the Railways Ministry. A meeting of the city unit of Congress was called on Thursday by B B Bahl to make preparations.

Ex-Mayor Kamlesh now head of welfare board

Chandigarh:Former Mayor Kamlesh has been appointed the chairperson of the Social Welfare Board. The Congress leader has twice served as the Mayor of the city and was a part of the civic body since its inception. She, however, lost the elections last year. The tenure of the chairperson – earlier held by Lalit Joshi – is for three years.

PGI doc awarded for his achievements

Chandigarh:The head of the department of paediatric surgery at PGIMER, Prof KLN Rao, has been awarded the Dr K C Sogani gold medal for his life-time achievements by the Indian Association of Paediatric Surgeons at its 38th Annual Conference in Bhopal. Prof Rao has 34 years of experience in clinical work, teaching and research in paediatric surgery and paediatric urology. He was the inventor of the radiological technique of cross table prone lateral (CTPL) radiograph in anorectal malformations as an alternative to invertogram in 1982 which is adopted all over the world. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Indian Association of Paediatric Surgeons since 2007.

Ophthalmologic body gets new president

Chandigarh:In the recently concluded 26th Annual Conference of North Zone Ophthalmological Society (NZOS), Prof Sunandan Sood was elected as the president of the society for the year 2012-13. In his presidential address he mentioned the various advancements in ophthalmology and added that India is becoming a medical hub because of its excellent infrastructure and expertise at a very affordable cost. However, he emphasised the need to pass on these benefits to the needy people in the suburbs and rural areas.
