A handful of city's top golfers, including professionals like Aditya Bhandarkar and Sourabh Bhadhuri, will receive a six-day training from July 10 by Australian coach Luke Cantelo of Butch Harman School of Golf. This is a result of a tie-up between the First Tee Golf Academy based at the Oxford Golf and Country Club and the Butch Harman School that has worked with legends such as Tiger Woods, Greg Normal, Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson.
"The idea was to create world- class players by giving them the best international exposure," said Aditya Kanitkar, director, First Tee. "As of now, the golf scene in India is dominated by North India. We want to put Pune on the map," he added.
A batch of First Tee golfers had travelled to the Dubai branch of the Butch Harman Academy last year for a similar camp with Cantelo. "Bringing Luke here on a regular basis will help us widen the base and involve more golfers," said Kanitkar.
The camp at Oxford will consist of three levels — elite (for professionals and amateurs active in national-level tournaments), junior (for golfers in the 10-15 age group) and sub-junior (5-9). "Apart from this, we'll also have a corporate clinic over the weekend and together, all four camps will total roughly 75 golfers," said Kanitkar.
The biggest benefit for the golfers at the elite camp is the in-depth technology-driven analysis that Cantelo will perform. "Butch Harman has tied up with the Titleist Performance Institute and this is basically to highlight the importance of how golfers' bodies are connected to their golf swing," said Cantelo. "By using tools like the K-vest — which will give a 3D view of a golfer's swing — we will physically screen all golfers and give them specific exercises."
