City’s first women drivers eager to set their own rules

Come Thursday and critics of women’s driving skills shall have their foot in their mouth. In a first,two city women are ready to flaunt their driving abilities by offering their services for the newly launched radio autos.

Smartly dressed in black trousers,a blue shirt,black cap and polished shoes,Santosh Chauhan and Alka G Thapa would surely be an inspiration to a greater lot.

Both from diverse fields such as science and computers,they are eager to set their own rules and motivate others in the process.

Coming from respectable families,Alka said she had apprehensions regarding her new job but Santosh says her family was very supportive about the whole new idea.

“I wanted to take up this challenging job and do something which would create history. I have worked in the science field for more than five years,” said a visibly excited Santosh.

A resident of Sector 24,her father is a retired employee of PGIMER while her mother works at GMSH in Sector 16.

The 12-hour job would fetch the 26-year-olds around Rs 5,000 a month plus commission on every trip.

When asked if their job would be any hindrance in finding a suitable match,Santosh and Alka replied unanimously that it was a matter of pride for them and it is the perception one has for any kind of work.

“We would rather remain unmarried than feel ashamed of our professions,” they echoed.

For Alka,her brother has been her inspiration. He is presently posted in West Bengal in the Border Security Force.

Originally from Nepal,Alka has been living with her family in Nayagaon in Chandigarh after completing her schooling.

When asked if they were satisfied with the salary offered to them,Alka beamed: “More than the money,the challenge associated with the job is more motivating. The shift from computers to driving is a complete U-turn in my life. I am eager to prove to the world that women are no less than men. It would be fun working while driving on city roads.”

Their employer,Managing Director Col (Retd) V S Dhillon of Tricity Tour and Travels shared the pride and enthusiasm of adding two women in their list of ten drivers for the

radio autos.
