The cash-strapped Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) administration has proposed doubling of charges levied on each show at the multiplex and air-conditioned theatres within its jurisdiction from the next financial year.

The civic body charges fees for all kind of entertainment programmes being organised in its jurisdiction. Any change in the tax structure for the next financial year has to be cleared by the general body by February 20 to be included in the civic budget. In a proposal tabled in the standing committee, the civic administration has urged the civic panel to increase the charge of Rs 100 per show in the multiplexes and air-conditioned theatres to Rs 200 per show. “There has been no change in the charges from 2003 and it is proposed to increase it only for multiplexes and air-conditioned theatres,” it said.

However, charges for all other entertainment activities remain unchanged. Single screen, non air-conditioned theatres with sitting capacity less than 500 seats will continue to charge Rs 40 per show and those above 500 seating capacity will charge Rs 70 per show. The Marathi film shows will remain tax free while a play will be charged Rs 50, a tamasha show Rs 10 and a musical concert Rs 70.
