While the nations focus remains on the officials allegedly involved in corruption during the Commonwealth Games, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has proposed to reward those who worked hard to put together the show. The civic body plans to pay Rs 2,500 to each of its 11,000 Grade C and D employees who worked day and night during the Games. Mukesh Bhatt,a member of the council, welcomed the move by the Welfare Department and said the proposal will be approved when it is discussed in the council meeting to be held on Wednesday. The members are,in fact, also proposing to include about 500-600 Category B employees who also worked very hard for the Games, he said. The proposal is expected to cost around Rs 2.75 crore, which will be paid from the civic bodys own funds. This is not the first time the NDMC is rewarding its employees. When the NDMC headquarters was inaugurated in 1983,the employees were given a weeks salary as reward, said another NDMC official. NDMCs Category C and D employees include security guards, clerks, gardeners and cleaners who kept the New Delhi area clean during the October 3-14 event. Commonwealth Games,an international multi-sports event involving athletes from Commonwealth countries, has been organised recently during the month of October and some of the events were organised in the NDMC area which was also the main point of attraction during the Games, reads the item on the meeting agenda. It goes on to add that the idea for the reward came up in the last council meeting held in October, when the council members appreciated the hard work of the NDMC employees.
