Trinamool Congress (TMC) may have swept the West Bengal panchayat polls, but it is not hazarding a guess on what will happen in the state in Lok Sabha elections next year.
Lok Sabha elections are different. We would not like to predict the outcome of Lok Sabha polls based on these results, party general secretary Mukul Roy said.
Several surveys based on the trend in panchayat elections have said TMC would increase its tally from 19 to 23 seats in the state. West Bengal has 42 Lok Sabha seats.
The panchayat polls showed a split in the anti-Left vote will hurt Congress more than TMC. Apart from retaining the Jalpaiguri zilla parishad in North Bengal, the Left surged to the top in the erstwhile Congress strongholds of North Dinajpur and Malda. It also made unexpected gains in North 24 Parganas,a TMC bastion.
