The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has directed the civic administration to control littering around the premise of the airport to tackle the menace posed by birds and animals near the airport. It said the solid waste management around 10-km periphery of the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) needs improvement.
There is a menace posed by stray dogs and birds around the garbage dumps near the airports as the garbage is strewn all around the area, said Harshad Kale,Assistant Municipal Commissioner of L ward (Kurla).
We have been advised to dispose the garbage in bags so that the garbage dumps do not attract birds, especially near the landing stand and take-off area of the airplanes, he added.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and CSIA have been conducting joint inspections since the past few months to ensure cleanliness around the airport premise.
A committee formed for the purpose includes civic officials from three adjoining wards of the airport L ward (Kurla),K East (Andheri east) and M east (Chembur east). These wards have been conducting inspections following the Airport Environment Management Committee meeting last September.
Animal waste from slaughter houses when disposed also attracts birds and animals. Earlier,MIAL had agreed to provide dustbins around the Gaondevi area outside the airport to avoid the garbage from getting scattered.
We have planned to intensify our action against illegal slaughter houses to ensure cleanliness, said a senior civic official.
According to officials, steps are routinely followed to ensure that the area around the airport is clean. We have planned to provide more garbage collecting bins. The frequency of the pick-up vans for garbage will also ensure a cleaner area, said an official. Officials are also responsible now to see to the fact that garbage is collected every 24 hours.
Besides attracting birds and animals, garbage around the airport perimeter wall is also seen as a security threat. The height of the Gaondevi dump is around 1.5 feet short of the perimeter wall and can be easily scaled now.
