Anusuya Sengupta was in college when she wrote a poem for Hillary Clinton on her visit to India in 1995. Clinton was supposed to visit Lady Shri Ram College, where Sengupta was a student, but had to cancel due to security reasons. Sengupta had written the poem on the status of women, which her principal gave to the then US First Lady.
The next day she read out the poem in her speech at the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, Sengupta, for whom it was a proud moment, says.
On Monday as well,Clinton read a line from the poem Too many women in too many countries speak the same language of silence while addressing the issue of womens emancipation at Delhi University. According to Clinton, she was so impressed by the line that she has used it in various conventions around the world.
Sengupta, now a womens rights activist, was present in the hall among the audience.
Sengupta says her fondest memory of the poem is the way her friend Alpana Purvar wrote it in calligraphy. It was written beautifully on handmade paper, she says.
The poem also inspired Clinton into putting a chapter in her autobiography called Silence is not spoken here, which talks of her 1995 visit to India.
