CM meets injured, lauds officials, medical team

Says Kumbh not only an event of the state, but entire country; distributes relief

Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday praised his officers, particularly the medical team, for doing a great job after the stampede at Allahabad railway station, in which 36 Kumbh pilgrims were killed and 39 were injured on Sunday.

However, he said that there should be no politics over the incident. The Kumbh Mela was not only an event of Uttar Pradesh, but of the entire country, and the entire world was watching. Yadav arrived here in the morning and visited the railway station, following which he went to meet the injured at Swaroop Rani Nehru (SRN) Hospital.

Talking to mediapersons after the inspection, Yadav said: "I have met the injured and asked them specifically, if they were being taken care of properly. All of them said that there were no complaints. I thank the doctors here for having done a great job. Be it the roads, the bridges and other things, our officers, right from the Inspector General to the Commissioner and the District Magistrate have been working very hard."

The Chief Minister also distributed cheques of Rs 1 lakh each to those injured, besides giving them Rs 5,000 in cash each during his visit to the hospital. He said that the next of the kin of the dead would be given cheques of Rs 7 lakh each.

"The incident is indeed very sad. The responsibility to get this festival conducted without such incidents is not only the responsibility of the state government, but everybody. It is not only an event of UP, but of the entire country, and the entire world was looking at the event," Akhilesh said. Yadav also later attended the cremation of Samajwadi Party MLA from Mahesh Narayan Singh, who died due to illness on Monday in a hospital in Gurgaon, near Delhi.
