CM,Shahi Imam in contempt,says RWA

The Jangpura Residents’ Welfare Association moved the Delhi High Court, seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

The Jangpura Residents’ Welfare Association (RWA) moved the Delhi High Court on Saturday, seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid,Syed Ahmed Bukhari, for allegedly instigating people to trespass and offer prayers in government land reclaimed by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) after razing an “illegal” mosque.

Filing the application through counsel R K Saini, the RWA also sought initiation of suo motu contempt proceedings against Shoib Iqbal,MLA of Matia Mahal constituency, and Asif Mohd Khan,MLA of Okhla area, for “deliberately and willfully violating the orders of the court.”

“By their actions and words, scandalising and lowering the authority of the court, interfering with the due course of judicial process, interfering and obstructing the administration of justice and bringing disrepute to the honour, majesty and authority of the law and the courts,” the application stated.

It was the RWA that had initially filed the petition in the High Court in 2006,following which the court had asked the DDA to remove the encroachments from the area and reclaim the land. They, however, failed to do so and the association filed a contempt petition in the High Court in October 2010.

With the High Court taking cognisance of the DDA’s failure to act on their assurance before the court, the civic body body demolished the mosque on Wednesday — leading to violence in the locality. The DDA,on Friday, requested the High Court to drop the contempt proceedings against it as they had followed the orders. The court took their plea on record and adjourned the hearing for March 1.

The fresh application, however, claims that Friday prayers were offered there and the site was now being occupied continuously by about 100 persons “at the instance of the Chief Minister,Shahi Imam and other local politicians.” The contempt application is likely to be heard on Monday.
