Tubectomy is still the popular way of family planning being followed in India as more than 98 per cent women get the operations done. The data of family welfare department also supports the same. To boost non-scalpel vasectomy (NSV) in men, CMCH (Christian Medical College and Hospital) has offered free bicycles for those who undergo the procedure.
The prize money given by the Centre to men undergoing NSV is Rs 1,100 while for women it is only Rs 250. Dr Jatinder taking care of this NSV camp which will be held on March 13 in CMCH, said, "The cycles have cost us more than Rs 2,600 and after seeking permission from the government, CMCH has purchased the bicycles. This is to attract men who normally never turn up in camps."
After persuading men from various areas, CMCH has found 50 people who are willing to get NSV done and 50 bicycles have already been purchased as all have given consent to get bicycle as a gift.
Dr Jatinder however said, "Our field staff tells us that women are adamant not to get family planning operations of their husbands done because of myths involved.
So we keep on making them aware that it is not going to weaken the men physically and hence they can earn their livelihood as normal."
She added, "Before the men could say no, women come forward themselves saying that they are ready for tubectomy but their husbands cannot undergo any surgery. So men alone are not to be blamed for this."
