The College of Engineering, Pune, (CoEP) has entered the Limca Book of Records and may have broken the Guinness world record by solving Rubik's Cube by most number of people in half an hour on Sunday. The college already holds the Guinness world record for most people skipping on a single rope and for longest painting by numbers.

A total of 3,267 people participated in the event, of whom 3,248 solved the Rubik's Cube. The participants included 60 CoEP faculty members, 80 alumni, 250 non-CoEPians and several students of the college.

The Guinness record for most number of people solving Rubik's Cube is held by IIT Bombay, with 937 people solving the Cube in 30 minutes.

The event was held on the CoEP ground between 11 and 11.30 am. A 220X150 ft area was cordoned off and around 3,500 chairs were occupied by the participants. As many as 15 CCTV cameras were set up. "We even had to stop owing to lack of adequate seating arrangements," said Bhushan Deshmukh, a core team member of CoEP's AKSHAT group that organised the event.

The Rubik's Cubes were all scrambled and checked before the start of the attempt.

The counting and review process was done from 1 pm-5.30 pm. The Limca Book of World Records entry was subsequently confirmed. The college will submit the relevant data, witness statements and video of the event to Guinness authorities in a week.

CoEP director Dr Anil Sahasrabudhe, who also participated, said, "I felt great sitting with students. When they were solving the Rubik's Cube in two-three minutes, we (faculty) were able to complete it only in six-ten minutes." He added, "Records are valuable. But today's achievement by students is more about a concerted, motivated effort. It involved months of planning, team work, leadership and execution of the task at hand to perfection. That is a virtue the students will carry wherever they go."
