Cold wave extends school winter break till Jan 13

All city schools have been asked to remain closed till January 12, "in view of the low temperature and extreme cold weather". The advisory was issued by Directorate of Education on Thursday.

The intense cold wave had left city residents shivering with the temperatures falling to record low.

Minister of Education Kiran Walia said all schools run by Delhi government, municipal corporations, Delhi Cantonment Board and recognised aided and unaided schools have been instructed to follow the order. The order states that "non-compliance of the orders will be viewed seriously."

Effectively, schools will reopen on January 14 as the day before that is a Sunday.

Although the order is not binding on private schools, chairman of the National Progressive Schools Alliance L V Sehgal said the schools are likely to take a call on extending their winter break on Friday.

"Normally in extreme weather conditions, we close our primary classes (up to Class V), but we have to keep in mind the number of teaching days in a year," Sehgal said.

He also said since some schools may be conducting their pre-Boards, so senior classes might remain open in private schools.
