Cold wave: UP death toll touches 69

The cold wave in Uttar Pradesh snuffed out lives of seven more persons with the overall death toll due to the harsh weather touching 69 on Sunday. Two people died in Barabanki district and one each in Gonda, Deoria, Ballia, Banda, and Hamirpur.

In UP, the maximum temperature was 11 degree Celcius, 6 degree below normal. The lowest minimum temperature of 0.7 degree Celcius was recorded at Lucknow airport. Most parts of north India continues to be under grip of winter even as heavy fog disrupted rail and air traffic. However, the minimum temperature in Punjab and Haryana rose due to cloudy sky.

The Delhi weather remained gloomy as fog returned after a gap of four days, taking the maximum temperature down four points to 17 degree Celsius. The minimum was 7.7 degree Celcius. The fog also affected the schedule of about 50 flights, airport sources said. However, the Sunday forecast of IMD predicted a clear sky with mist on Monday morning. Low visibility in Chandigarh led trains running in the region to remain behind schedule. Most flights were either cancelled or rescheduled. Hisar was the coldest region in Punjab while Haryana recorded a low of 2.2 degree Celcius.
