College girls taught self-defence by police

Brimming with enthusiasm, a group of 35 girls from Government College for Girls, Sector 42 showcased martial arts as a part of their self defence program.

The NSS unit of the college organised a valedictory function for the 15-day self-defence program launched by the Chandigarh Police as a part of its initiative to empower girls in the wake of a recent spurt in cases of crime against women.

The newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) RP Upadhyaya, who was also the chief guest on the occasion, emphasised that the girls need to empower themselves and tolerance of any kind will only encourage such offenders. He added that Chandigarh Police has made such visits to all the educational institutes a part of their day-to-day functioning and such training programs will be organised on a regular basis.

Principal Mani Bedi, while citing an October incident of a student named Komal, who bravely fought against the eve-teasers as she had learnt self-defence, asked the girls to be brave. She requested Chandigarh Police to organise one such visit again in August which will help the girls to be more self-reliant.

The function, which was attended by the top brass of the police officers, concluded with prizes being awarded to all the volunteers and the trainers of the anti-trafficking unit of Chandigarh Police. Zahida Nisha, a BA-II year student who was also a volunteer said, "The training has infused immense confidence in me to fight back when needed. So, now I am no more scared when I commute daily from Manimajra to Chandigarh in public transport."
