A 20-year-old engineering student was found stabbed to death metres away from his residence in Vasant Kunj in South Delhi on Thursday night. Police said a school girl he knew and who was with him in the afternoon was being questioned.
Shobhit Modi,a 2nd-year engineering student at the Manav Rachna University in Faridabad,was found bleeding at the gates near his residence at 6040,C-6,Vasant Kunj. He was taken to Fortis Hospital where he was declared dead.
Son of MMTC General Manager Suraj Modi,Shobhit attended school at DPS,R K Puram before he opted for engineering.
A police officer said Shobhit had struck a friendship with a school girl but her parents disapproved. The girls parents,who wanted an end to this friendship,even met his parents,the officer said.
On Thursday,Shobhit left his house at 3.30 pm in an Alto car with a driver. They reached the DLF Promenade mall where he met his friends,including the girl. Around 6.30 pm,he went home to collect his wallet and returned to the mall. He sent his driver away,saying he would call if he needed him, the officer said.
Dhanesh Gupta,Shobhits uncle,said: It was a group of six friends,three boys and three girls. Barring a school girl,the others were college friends. Shobhits friends frequented the house. It was a close-knit group.
According to the police officer,his friends,barring the school girl,left the mall for their homes by 7.30 pm. At 8.45 pm,the girl called up her parents and asked them to fetch her from the mall. After 25 minutes,Shobhit called the landline at home and told his mother that he would be back in the next 15 minutes, the officer said.
At 9.45 pm,Teg Chand,the colony guard on duty at C-5 Gate No. 3,which is metres from Shobhits C-6 residence,heard what sounded like a thud. He saw a youth lying next to his room. When he realised that the youth was bleeding profusely,he informed the guard at Gate No. 2 who then made a phone call to the Police Control Room at 9.50 pm, the officer said.
By the time police arrived,Shobhit had been taken to Fortis Hospital where doctors declared him bought dead. His medical examination is said to have revealed that he had four stab wounds and scratches all over this,investigators said,suggests that he probably put up resistance.
At the C-6 house,Shobhits grandfather was inconsolable: My grandson had come over to Jaipur only two months ago where the entire family celebrated his birthday.
Police ruled out robbery as a motive since Shobhits wallet,Tissot watch,and iPhone were still with him when he was found lying on the ground.
Chayya Sharma,Deputy Commissioner of Police (South),said: A case has been registered. We are reviewing CCTV footage from the mall. Seven teams have been constituted and the case is being investigated from all possible angles.
