The Umargam Sessions Court on Wednesday took
up the anticipatory bail application filed by suspended Deputy Superintendent of Police Dr N K Amin in the Colonel Pratap Save murder case. The court has upheld the order till Friday.
The Judicial Magistrate First Class Court of Umargam had issued arrest warrant against Amin and Inspector J K Jhala for their alleged role in the custodial death of Colonel Save, on August 7, 2009.
The court has ordered the two officers to remain present in the court on October 30. Amin is at present lodged in the Sabarmati Central Jail in Ahmedabad in connection with the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case. His advocate had filed an anticipatory bail application before the court a few days ago.
Colonel Pratap Save had started the Kinara Bachav Sangarsh Samithi movement in Umargam taluka of Valsad district in 2000 after the state government declared to construct a port for petroleum and liquefied gas in the taluka. Colonel Save had led an agitation against the state government in this regard.
The Umargam police had arrested him from his house in Dehri village in Umargam taluka on April 7, 2000 for organising unlawful assembly and rioting. He was allegedly severely beaten up in police custody.
Sunita, the wife of the late Colonel, in her application to the Gujarat High Court, had accused the police of physically torturing her husband in custody which resulted in his death. Colonel Save died at the Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai after the doctors operated on his head.
