They flock in thousands to watch his movies. And now, they can see him in three dimension — in wax, at Madame Tussauds in London.
The museum today announced that a wax figure of Shah Rukh Khan will be the next to stand in its Hall of Fame. “King Khan will take part in a sitting with Tussauds Studios sculptors in February,” said the announcement. Khan’s wax figure, among the only 15 new figures created each year, will be unveiled at Easter.
Amitabh Bachchan is one of the popular figures at the museum that attracts over 25 lakh visitors each year, a large number of whom come from India. In fact, the so-called popularity contest between Bachchan and Khan was first initiated, though unintentionally, by Madam Tussauds and Channel 4 in 2000 when they jointly conducted an Internet poll to select the most popular Bollywood star for the museum.
Bachchan won the contest with 2,600 votes while Khan secured 1,500.
Khan, however, is hugely popular among the Indian Diaspora here and his films often run to full houses in many of the UK’s multiplexes.
Last summer, while participating in the first Bollywood festival organised by the British Film and Television Academy, Khan said: “NRIs have been important to me. NRI market is as good to us as the market in India and UK is number one for us.”
Perhaps someone from Madame Tussauds heard this.
