Come next session,MAT result may hold admission key to PTU colleges

Punjab Technical University (PTU) plans to do away with the common entrance exam (CET) for admission to its affiliated engineering colleges from the next academic session.

Punjab Technical University (PTU) plans to do away with the common entrance exam (CET) for admission to its affiliated engineering colleges from the next academic session. Instead, admissions would be made on the basis of Management Aptitude Test (MAT) results. It has also been decided that the counselling process would go online.

These significant changes in the admission process were announced on Wednesday by PTU Vice-Chancellor Dr Rajneesh Arora during a press meet at PHD Chambers in Sector 31,where he was present as chief guest for an MBA fest organised by Aryan’s Business School.

Speaking with Newsline,Arora said the change in pattern of admission to engineering colleges has been made keeping in mind that the MAT pattern is wider and evaluates a student in a better manner. While CET comprises only maths-based questions,MAT is seen as a general aptitute test.

The Vice-Chancellor further elaborated on the expansion plans of the university, adding that it planned to open colleges in Ranchi,Patna,Raipur,Jammu and Patna.

Reacting to reports about the easy affiliation process that the university follows which has led to the mushrooming of institutes especially engineering colleges,Dr Arora said it was the need of the hour. He justified the move stating most students from the colleges get decent placements thus adding to the economy of the country.

The delay in declaration of results of various courses by the university was blamed on the recent clashes in Jalandhar by the V-C. He added that the varsity was in the process of setting up more evaluation centres which would ensure results in time from the next session. Arora also said parents and students were free to approach him directly for redressal of any grievance and he would ensure immediate relief.

“PTU would request the Punjab Government to assign them the responsibility of organising MBA counselling in the state from the next academic session,” Arora said, adding that the university holds almost 90 per cent of the seats.
