Top officials from two state departments visited the National Institute of Design (NID) campus on Wednesday to meet the team re-designing the state transport buses, and see how it will be more comfortable for commuters and primary schoolchildren.
Secretary of Primary Education R P Gupta said his department is planning to organise four-day educational tours for rural schoolchildren beginning next year, for which eight or nine specially designed GSRTC buses would be used as soon as they are ready, probably by 2011.
These buses would take schoolchildren from villages to Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad to see locations like the state Assembly, science city and others,Gupta said.
The buses will have interiors designed to be as comfortable as possible for the children, and video players and speakers to screen educational videos during the journey.
The GSRTC had recently sent a formal request to NID to offer proposals for new designs for its buses, and two students guided by co-coordinator of Transportation and Automobile Design Praveen Nahar are currently working on the project.
Nahar with students Sanjay Urikoth and Imlisashi Aier is currently working inside a GSRTC bus parked in the campus, retrofitted with computers, lights and sketches.
A wad of post-it notes is offered near the pilots cabin, welcoming each visitor to write their opinions about the bus build and interiors.
GSRTC Managing Director Raj Gopal said the project aims to modernise the departments buses while maintaining low costs. Once we have the suggestions, well incorporate them, he said.
