With concrete evidence that China is pushing fake drugs with ‘Made in India’ labels into the African market, the commerce ministry has decided to come down heavily on the Chinese administration and make them accountable for the problem.

The ministry has requested the Indian embassy in Beijing to lodge a strong protest with the concerned Chinese authorities and to ensure that strict action is taken against the perpetrators.

According to an official statement by the commerce and industry ministry, the Nigerian government’s Drug Regulatory Authority has reported to the Indian government about the detention of a large consignment of fake anti-malarial generic pharmaceutical labelled ‘Made in India’ but produced in China. “After a laboratory analysis, the drugs have been found to be fake,” it said.

“India expects China to take strong measures in this aspect. India would intensify its efforts to strengthen its position on generic medicines in Africa,” the statement added.
