  • The 51-year-old managing director of Hindustan National Glass and Industries Limited was detained at the domestic terminal of the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Monday night for allegedly stealing a passenger’s Blackberry phone.

The accused, Sanjay Somany, was produced in the court on Tuesday and released on bail. Somany was detained after the passenger, N K Puri, reported the loss of his Blackberry phone to CISF personnel around 5.30 am on Monday. Somany was scheduled to depart for Chennai by Air India flight IC 439 at 6.05 am.

CISF officials checked CCTV footage and zeroed in on a passenger in blue overalls.

“Our Chennai counterparts were contacted to trace the man,” CISF spokesperson Rohit Katiyar said. Somany was intercepted by CISF team when he returned to Delhi the same evening. Somany was later handed over to the Delhi Police. “A case was registered against Somany under Section 380 and 411 of the IPC,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Operations) Satyendra Garg, said.

Somany is a former president of All India Glass Manufacturers’ Federation. The police said Somany is allegedly a kleptomaniac. A spokesperson of the Hindustan National Glass said the incident was a “case of confusion in mobile identification during security check”. Investigating officers, however, said Somany had a Sony Ericsson phone.
