For the first time,all schools in the state both private and governmentwill have compulsory one hour physical fitness class for all students. Also,any sportsperson found guilty of doping will be stripped of his/her medal.
According to sources,the sports department has amended the sports policy formulated last year. The new policy is expected to be placed before the Cabinet in its next meeting for clearance.
As per the amendments it has been proposed to create basic sports facilities in schools and colleges and make sports an integral part of school and college curriculum.
Special focus will also be laid on the physical fitness at school level and at least one hour would be devoted for sports activities in the time-table for all classes.
A sports department official said,Once cleared by the Cabinet,action will be taken against the schools and principals who do not follow the directions. The school may even be de-recognised.
It has also been proposed that the state government,along with the Punjab Olympic Association (POA),will adopt zero tolerance policy on doping. If any player is found guilty,his/her medal will be taken back by the state government. A proposal to create a three-tier system of sports in the state,block,district and state levels was also made.
To grant recognition to top players in each discipline prize initiatives would also be introduced at the district and state level. Sportspersons will also be given jobs in government corporations and undertakings,stated the amended draft policy.
It further states that universities in the state will further be encouraged to maintain their supremacy at All India Inter-University level and will be given Rs 1 crore if they win the MAKA trophy and Rs 50 lakh and Rs 25 lakh,respectively,for second and third position holders. The university will utilise the money for developing sports infrastructure.
