After a heavy downpour on Friday, the sun shone over Mumbai on Saturday, driving the maximum temperature to 30 degrees and 31 degrees Celsius (from Fridays 24.3 degrees and 26.3 degrees) in Colaba and Santacruz respectively.
However, officials at the India Meteorology Department confirmed that weather conditions on the west coast still remain conducive for rainfall activity.
The offshore trough the main phenomenon that causes rains in this part is still strong along the west coast extending from Gujarat to Kerala. Besides, the pressure gradient is also rather strong, K Sathidevi, director of IMD Mumbai said. She added that while an oscillation in day-to-day weather is normal, the conditions still remain very good for rainfall to occur in Mumbai.
The IMD forecast on Saturday stated that spells of rain and thundershowers would continue in the city till Sunday, with a possibility of heavy rains along with strong gusty winds in some areas. The maximum and minimum temperatures are predicted to be around 31 degree and 25 degree Celsius.
Sathidevi also pointed out,When the weather remains sunny during the day time,it can also lead to moisture accumulating through the day and causing rains later at night.
Meanwhile,on Saturday, the south-west monsoon further advanced into the interiors and covered almost the entire state,IMD officials said. While the interiors are not seeing much rain currently, with the pressure gradient being rather weak in the inlands, the monsoon has officially covered all of Maharashtra today, barring a few regions of Vidharba, Sathidevi explained.
The department predicted moderate to heavy rainfall to continue over all the districts of Konkan-Goa and light to moderate rainfall likely in the inlands.
