Cong has a ‘concrete’ Ghar nu Ghar plan

In a bid to capitalise on its "Ghar nu Ghar (own your house)" scheme that drew tremendous response, the state Congress is building two sample houses to show how these houses meant for the housewives of homeless families would look like.

The affordable housing scheme was announced by the party two months ago as a poll promise, to be fulfilled if the Congress came to power.

More than 50 lakh women had reportedly filled and submitted the application forms for these to the party offices.

The sample houses are of two types. The first comprises one room, a kitchen, a separate toilet and bathroom while the second has two rooms, a kitchen, and a separate toilet and bathroom. The sample houses are being built in the open space within the premises of the state Congress headquarters.

Workers giving finishing touches said it would require two or three days more to complete the houses.

The houses have walls made of brick with plasters of cement with a coating of white cement mixed with plaster of Paris to give it smoothness and good. The floorings are of glazed tiles. While the kitchen and bathroom doors are made of hard and thick fibre, the main door is made of wooden material.

State party president Arjun Modhwadia, when contacted, said once the houses were fully complete, these would be open to the public to see it for themselves.

"This is the type of houses the Congress will construct for housewives of homeless families if the party comes to power in December 2012 elections," said Modhwadia.

However, the Congress chief did not answer questions like the architect involved or the cost incurred on each of the two houses.

"I will not at the moment reveal the name of the architect," said Modhwadia.

Another party leader said the architect is well known in the city for designing affordable housing but he also refused to divulge the name.
