This is the first time Cong has called for CM’s ouster

Upbeat following their spectacular victory in the bypolls for 10 seats, the Congress today joined the Trinamool Congress in calling for the resignation of Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

Even as Trinamool leaders urged for early polls and called it a victory against the “CPM terror”, Congress leaders too joined the chorus for the CM’s resignation, and said they are investigating the loss of Goalpokhor seat, a party stronghold that has now gone to the Trinamool.

“People have blessed us overwhelmingly. Election after election, the CPM is being routed. During the Lok Sabha polls, people had passed a no-confidence against the CPM-led state government. Now, it is time once again to go for a fresh mandate in the state,” Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee said while speaking to a news channel from Delhi. She also warned her supporters on excesses in the name of celebrations.

“This is the time to work for the people. This is the time to stand by the people of Bengal who are being victimised by armed cadres of CPM along with the Maoists,” she added.

Trinamool MLA Partho Chatterjee, who is also the leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly, today held a press conference at Banerjee’s Kalighat residence and called for the immediate resignation of the chief minister.

“If he has any shame, he should resign immediately. The people of Bengal want him to step down. He has lost the right to his chair. The CPM has snatched the land of the people, terrorised and killed hundreds in Bengal. Apart from this, there is no development in Bengal... unemployment is on the rise,” Chatterjee said, adding his party supporters in different areas have been asked to show restraint while celebrating the victory.
