Cong leaders meet over poll results

Senior Congress leaders met here on Saturday to analyse the Assembly poll results and to find out where they were weak and how they can overcome their shortcomings that prevented them from wresting power from BJP. Congress won only 61 seats, two seats more than its tally of 59 in 2007.

The leaders, according to sources, were of the opinion that the party needed to improve its position in the urban centres by strengthening the party at the grassroots level as well as in south region where party's performance was against expectations.

The senior leaders also reportedly felt that there were also some miscalculations by the leadership in selection of candidates that resulted in defeat of candidates at many places.

State party president Arjun Modhwadia, who also lost the polls from Porbander, said during the post-mortem exercise of the Assembly poll results, the leaders suggested to reorganise the party in urban areas.

He said a detailed discussion was also held to prepare strategies for the upcoming local bodies elections for 77 nagarpalikas, two zilla panchayats and 15 taluka panchayats to be held in the next two months.

Besides Modhwadia and Siddharth Patel, other leaders in the meeting included Shankersinh Vaghela, Shaktisinh Gohil, Madhusudan Mistry and Pravin Rashtrapal.
