The ruling Congress party on Tuesday lost the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council elections to the Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC)-BJP combine, as results of the election were announced on Tuesday.

Of the 17 seats for which results were declared, the Congress failed to get any, while the ASDC and its ally BJP bagged nine and six seats respectively. Two seats were won by independent candidates. The NC Hills Autonomous Council has a total strength of 27 seats.

The ASDC-BJP combination is now all set to form the Council under provisions of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. The Congress, which had an absolute majority in the last Council and had also ruled the council for 44 years since 1952, even lost the most prestigious Haflong seat where it had fielded veteran leader and legislator Gobinda Chandra Langthasa.
