Claiming that his life was under serious threat,a Congress member of the Lok Sabha on Tuesday sought security from the Centre saying some people had recently entered his house,beat up his family members and damaged his belongings. Madam,I have been raising this matter since last year but no security has been granted to me. The Home Ministry is not at all concerned. I am under serious threat… I can be killed anytime. It is a conspiracy by my opponents, Rajaram Pal,who represents Akbarpur constituency in Uttar Pradesh,said during Zero Hour. Pal said he had informed the local police and administration but no action was taken.
Anti-Naxal ops: States owe Rs 5,000 crore
More than Rs 5,000 crore are lying as outstanding dues against various state governments on account of deployment of central paramilitary forces for anti-Naxal operations,the government said on Tuesday. The largest amount in this regard is pending against Chhattisgarh (Rs 1,070.54 crore),followed by Jharkhand (Rs 876.10 crore) and Uttar Pradesh (Rs 818.92 crore),Minister of State for Home Jitendra Singh told the Lok Sabha in a written reply. He said the total dues stood at Rs 5,021.63 crore.
Over 17.4 lakh children under 5 die annually
More than 17.4 lakh children in India die every year before they reach their fifth birthday,the government said on Tuesday. As per SRS (Sample Registration System) data 2009,17.4 lakh children are estimated to die before the age of five years, MoS for Health Sudip Bandyopadhay said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. About 55 per cent of the deaths were neonatal or deaths in the first 28 days of life,he said. Deaths due to pneumonia and diarrhoea account for 11 per cent,the minister said.
