Cong MPs call on PM, seek action

A delegation of women MPs from the Congress Wednesday met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to express anguish over the incident of gangrape of a 23-year-old woman in New Delhi Sunday and demanded that fast-track courts be set up and justice to such victims delivered in a time-bound manner.

Renuka Chowdhury, who was part of the delegation, said the prime minister was "very disturbed and upset" about the incident and told them he would take it up with Cabinet colleagues. He told them that he has talked to Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and directed him to take all possible measures to ensure that culprits are brought to book and such incidents do not recur.

Chowdhury said that in her personal opinion, "chemical castration" of such culprits should be examined as other countries have already adopted it. A delegation of women MPs will also be meeting Delhi Lieutenant Governor Tejinder Khanna to seek better security measures, Chowdhary said. "This incident cannot be allowed to remain mere statistics. We will keep the issue alive so that there is no recurrence of such incidents," she said.
