Last year,Dr Sharma found himself in the middle of a controversy over his inclination to veer towards the BSP. However, after Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s intervention he returned to the party fold.

Despite stiff opposition from a section of state Congressmen during the selection process of the candidates, who said Sharma could not be trusted again,he was given the ticket because of his good clout among the electorate and his potential to win.

As expected, sitting MP from Sirsa,Atma Singh Gill failed to get renomination, making way for Tanwar. Haryana Irrigation Minister Capt Ajay Singh Yadav was also in the running for the Gurgaon Lok Sabha seat.

Rao Inderjit Singh was the sitting MP from Mahendergarh Lok Sabha constituency. However, after the delimitation process,Bhiwani and Mahendergarh constituencies were combined to form a single constituency. The Congress, therefore, thought it would be wise to shift him to the nearby Gurgaon constituency which has a mix of Muslim,Ahir and Yadav communities.

MLA Jitender Malik and CM Hooda’s wife Asha Hooda are said to be the other two main contenders for the Sonepat seat, while Rao Daan Singh and Aniruddha are the other candidates for Bhiwani-Mahendergah seat.
