Cong polls: Virbhadra meets returning officer

The first round of organisational elections of the Pradesh Congress Committee are under way in Himachal Pradesh amid controversies and reports of factionalism in the party.

The first round of organisational elections of the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) are under way in Himachal Pradesh amid controversies and reports of factionalism in the party. Union Minister for Steel Virbhadra Singh was at the state party office in Shimla on Monday and held a meeting with returning officer Rajni Patil.

The meeting was a crucial one in the context of appointing assistant returning officers in six constituencies, including Rohru (earlier represented in the Assembly by Virbhadra),Dehra,Jwalamukhi,Kangra,Kullu and Jaisinghpur. The decision has been hanging fire for a long time now. In the list of AROs appointed for the remaining units (out of total 69),the dominance of Anand Sharma and Virbhadra Singh’s loyalists is almost equal.

On Sunday,a unanimous resolution was passed by the District Congress Committee for election of Anand Sharma as PCC delegate from Shimla Urban.

With the first round of DCC elections midway across the state, all controversies, and complaints by the warring factions in each constituency, were put up before Patil on Monday.

“No formal complaints have been received till now. I am meeting party workers and sorting out the matters through personal intervention and amicable solutions,” Patil told The Indian Express.

Sources said most complaints received by Patil were of rigging. At many places, voters have also complained of their names going missing from electoral lists.

When asked about the allegations regarding “unfair election” of the Shimla DCC chief, general secretary for organisational matters Asha Kumari said: “How can someone say that an election was unfair, when 137 of 172 delegates were present? The election was held after fair information to all voters.”
