Concerned over the “rapidly deteriotating” law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh,Congress today questioned Chief Minister Mayawati’s moral authority to continue in office, but sidestepped queries on whether President’s rule be imposed in the state.
Alleging that the spate of terrible atrocities against women are continuing unabated in Uttar Pradesh, party spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan told reporters,”Despite being a woman, the Chief Minister has not shown an iota of seriousness.”
She alleged that the incidents were a “blot on any civil society” and were “a terrible blot on the government”. The situation has degenerated into “anarchy” as women cannot walk safely on the streets, she said, adding that the CM had taken “no action at all”.
Questioning the CM’s moral authority to continue in office, she asked Mayawati to take immediate steps to maintain law and order.
Asked whether Uttar Pradesh, where Assembly elections are due early next year, was a fit case for President’s rule, she said,”It is a Constitutional issue and it is not for me to comment on what the governor should do”.
