RJD president Lalu Prasad on Saturday accused the Congress of trying to drive a wedge between the RJD and the LJP. He said that the successful bandh called by the two parties showed that the Congress would not succeed in its nefarious design to wean away Ramvilas Paswan by offering him a ministerial berth at the Centre.

Lalu and Paswan, who spent most of the day ensuring a successful bandh over the price rise in petroleum products, reiterated their “rock-solid” alliance. The two leaders, who courted symbolic arrest in the evening, said they were against both the central and state governments for failing to control price rise and hoarding.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, however, termed the RJD-LJP bandh a flop. “When we had (already) called a bandh over the same matter on June 5,there was no rationale in enforcing the bandh today. But Laluji always follows weird ways,” he said, adding that the public had to face inconvenience.

Road and rail services were disrupted across the state. All National Highways linking Patna to major districts were blocked. At Hajipur, some protestors torched a portion of the rail track. No damage, however, was done. Most schools also remained closed. In most cases, the bandh was made successful by influential locals and teenagers, who pelted stones at private vehicles.

DGP Neelmani told The Sunday Express: “In all,we made 11,317 preventive arrests during the bandh. Of these,1,268 people were arrested at Patna. Darbhanga and Vaishali saw 1,052 and 1,043 preventive arrests respectively. There was no report of any unsavoury incident from anywhere.”
