Irked by by the statement made by Shiromani Akali Dal MP Naresh Gujral in Parliament in which he had suggested imposition of tax on farmers,Congress MLAs staged a walkout from the Punjab Assembly during Zero Hour on Friday.

“Punjab is an agricultural sate and the government of the day led by SAD claims to be farmer’s government. But SAD MP Naresh Gujral yesterday told in Parliament that The Centre should levy Income Tax on agriculture, said Congress MLA Alit Index Molar during the Zero Hour. Molar quoted Gujral as saying in Parliament,“Amend the agricultural marketing Act. I know you will say that my state is going to object or my chief minister is going to object. He will not object and no state will object if you allow states to levy tax and not ask them to forfeit their right to levy taxes. Why don’t you introduce state income tax on lines in USE.”

To this Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said: “The ruling SAD-BOP coalition has always fought for the farmers’ rights,we will find out what did Gujral say in the Parliament and if any wrong thing has been said,it will be corrected.”

The Congress MLAs also raised the issue of government selling it’s prime properties. “The government is now selling 30 of its prime properties worth Rs 2,567 crore. How can a government elected for five years could sell government properties and give them on lease for 99 years. The government gives the pretext that these valuable properties are under the threat of encroachment but already these properties have been transferred to Punjab Infrastructural Development Board (PIDB). In 2007,the government used the PIDB’s money to hold sangat darshans. Also the PIMS in Jalandhar which was a Rs 2000 crore property was given on lease for just Rs 131 crore,” said Congress MLA Sukhpal Khaira.
