Modi said Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan had openly stated that Bangladeshis who infiltrated into India should be given Indian citizenship and voting rights but the Prime Minister remained mum.
"Dr. Manmohan Singh, do you want to give Indian citizenship to Bangladeshis (who infiltrated into India)?" Modi said. "If you don't want, why did you not remove him (Paswan) from ministership? Why did you not seek an explanation from him?" Modi said.
Noting that Singh was elected to Rajya Sabha from Assam, Modi said the north-eastern state faced the grave problem of Bangladeshi infiltrators.
He said there was not much difference between Gujarat and Assam in terms of the fact that while Bangladesh is Assam's neighbour, it's Pakistan in the case of Gujarat.
"There is difficulty in Assam because of Bangladesh infiltrators. But there is a government in Gujarat....because of me, the whole of Pakistan is in difficulty", he remarked.
