Pune police arrested a 40-year-old conman for allegedly raping his pregnant wife and cheating her by not telling her about his four marriages in the past. Also, when his wife sought divorce after knowing about his past, he allegedly demanded Rs 25 lakh from her. Police have identified the suspect as Rajesh Ramchandra Ravtani, resident of Koregaon Park and a native of Hyderabad. He, however, operated with a fake name of Raj Dixit in Pune.
His 26-year-old wife, a Pune-based interior designer, lodged a police complaint. Following her complaint, a police team led by inspector Sachin Sawant of the anti-extortion cell of the Pune police crime branch arrested Ravtani on Monday. Police recovered his fake pancard, driving licence and other documents from him. Sawant said that Ravtani alias Raj Dixit shifted to Pune about one-and-a-half-years ago. He also took a flat and a shop on rent in the plush Koregaon Park area. He started going to Osho Ashram, where he came in contact with his wife, who was then a divorcee.
Ravtani had plans of starting a shoe store in Koregaon Park. As the woman was an interior designer, he asked her to do the interiors of his shop. He then lured her into marriage and developed physical relations with her. The couple got married in May 2012. The woman also got pregnant from him.
"The couple started residing together at Koregaon Part. One day the woman found a CD of Ravtani's marriage with another woman. She got the details of this woman from facebook. She contacted the woman and came to know that his real name was Rajesh Ravtani and he was married to four women, one from Mumbai and three from Hyderabad and took divorce from all before getting married to her," Savant said.
The woman then sought divorce but he allegedly demanded Rs 25 lakh. The woman, however, lodged a complaint against him. Police then arrested him under Sections 376, 376 (2) (for raping a pregnant woman), 420 (cheating), 467, 468 (forgery), 509, 506 (2) under the Indian Penal Code.
