A 47-year-old police constable was arrested by the Colaba police after a woman filed a case of rape against him. The woman alleged that the accused, Deepak Chavan, attached to the Local Arms Unit III (Worli), had promised to marry her after persuading her to enter into a physical relationship with him.

According to the woman’s complaint, she and Chavan had been into a relationship for five years. She was compelled to lodge a complaint after realising that Chavan had no intentions of marrying her.

The police arrested Chavan on Saturday night. Chavan, who is married, stays in police quarters in Colaba and his wife and a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter stay in Ahmedabad. According to the complainant, who is employed as a clerk at the SNDT College, she had first met Chavan in 2003 at the MHADA office at Mantralaya.

“The woman’s father is a retired MHADA employee and the family stays at a MHADA flat in Borivli. In 2003, she had come to the Mantralaya for some work and met Chavan, who was a telephone operator at the MHADA Department. The two became friends,” said police inspector Prakash Bhoite from the Colaba police station, who is investigating the case.

“Though the victim knew that Chavan was married, she got carried away by his promises. He established physical relationship with her. However, when even after five years of courtship, he kept avoiding marriage, the couple began to fight. Finally realising that he had cheated her, the victim lodged a complaint on July 25,” said Bhoite.
