I wish I could turn back time, stop him from going to work... how could they do this to him: Wife.

In his career with the Delhi Police, Constable Subhash Chand Tomar won 77 commendations for good work. The 78th one came for bravely facing the unruly crowd during Sunday's violent protests in which he was attacked and trampled upon by protesters.

After he collapsed, Tomar (46) was taken to RML Hospital. Doctors said he suffered a cardiac arrest, but was revived and put on ventilator support. He suffered another cardiac arrest at 6.20 am on Tuesday and died.

Amresh Devi, Tomar's wife, is inconsolable. "The day began with a bad omen. His bike tyre had a puncture and he returned home. I wanted to tell him, 'Please do not go to the police station today', but I kept quiet. I wish I could turn back time, stop him from going to work," she said.

Tomar, who joined the force in 1989, was posted at Karawal Nagar police station, but was asked to man the Tilak Marg station on Sunday.

Tomar's son Aditya told Newsline: "He never used to take leave, he took his work very seriously. He has worked very hard to raise his children. This incident has left us shaken and without any support."

In 1989, Tomar suffered severe burn injuries on his hand in an explosion on board a DTC bus. But the injuries did not stop him from reporting for duty, Aditya said.

"He was injured badly in that blast. But he went to work," Aditya said.

Tomar is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter — Deepak (22) is a second-year BBA student, Aditya (18) is preparing for competitive exams and Jyoti (22) is pursuing her BEd.

"Just two days ago, he told me that he is looking for a suitable groom for our daughter. How could god do this to me? How am I going to handle my children alone, give them good education and marry them off," Amresh said.
