Contempt rule against top officials of Food Dept

The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday issued a contempt rule against Principal Secretary and Commissioner of the Food and Supply Department and another official in connection with the appointment of dealers in the Siliguri sub-division under Darjeeling district. The officials have been told to appear in the court after six weeks.

During the hearing, Kalyan Banerjee, who is also Trinamool Congress MP, slammed the Food and Supply Department saying total anarchy was prevailing in the state government's department.

The contempt petition was not enough against the official of the department concerned, criminal case should be started for the corruption in the Food and Supply Department, said Banerjee. Two weeks ago, Banerjee was vocal against the state government during the hearing in the Calcutta High Court.

In 2006, the Food and Supply Department had invited application for the appointment of 41 dealers in Siliguri sub-division. After the applicants were not allotted dealerships, they approached the high court. The high court had directed in favour of the petitioners but the order was never implemented. The applicants then filed contempt application in 2012 against the Food and Supply Department.
