Cop assault: Orissa women’s panel blames Tytler for inciting violence

More than a month after the Orissa Police named him as the chief conspirator in the September 6 violence that saw Congress workers assault a policewoman, the State Commission for Women has blamed Congress leader Jagdish Tytler for whipping up mob frenzy.

More than 260 people, including 63 policemen, were injured when Congress workers tried to storm the Assembly and clashed with the police.

Besides Tytler, incharge of the Congress in Orissa, state party chief Niranjan Patnaik was also named in the FIRs. In a video footage of the incident, Tytler is heard saying, "Tod do, tod do; ek dhakka aur do" to the crowd.

The commission's has sought a probe into the violence and reward for constable Pramila Padhi for her courage.

"The words used by Tytler incited the gathering to break the cordon and enter the prohibited area. Some started pelting stones and some ran with lathis. They started beating police personnel. The situation would not have turned serious had he avoided using provocative words," the report said.
