Cop’s murder: Inquiry into role of BSP MP’s son begins

The Lakhimpur Kheri police have begun an inquiry into a complaint alleging that a local youth Gaurav Gupta was falsely implicated in the murder of a police sub-inspector and then killed in a fake encounter in Lucknow in 2009, in order to save the actual killer Sonu, the son of BSP MP Jugal Kishore.

A native of Muzaffarnagar, sub-inspector Jitendra Singh Teotia was shot dead by some men after an argument over parking of vehicles at Rajkhiya Inter College in Kheri on July 12. An FIR was lodged against six persons at Kotwali police station. The police arrested five of them.

Gupta was gunned down in an encounter in Lucknow's Hazratganj area on July 17. The police declared that it was Gupta who had shot dead the sub-inspector.

Lakhimpur Kheri SP Dalvir Singh Yadav said he received a complaint from Gupta's friend Ramesh Bind, stating that the actual killer of the sub-inspector was Sonu, and he had been let off because of his father's influence.

Jugal Kishore, a member of the Rajya Sabha and BSP zonal coordinator, said the allegation against his son was false. Sonu was in Mussoorie when the sub-inspector was killed, he said.

He said Bind was neither a relative of the sub-inspector nor of Gupta, but the police wanted to conduct an inquiry three years after the crime. "The state government is trying to harass my family. My wife Damyanti Kishore is zila panchayat president and on October 18, a no-confidence motion is coming up against her. By filing false cases against my family, they want to harass us," said Jugal Kishore.

The SP said an inquiry has been ordered to verify the facts.
