The Gamdevi police are struggling to explain how BARC scientist M Padmanabhan Iyer died. They said the cord found around the body was from a pyjama and not strong enough to have strangled the 48-year-old.
Police are investigating clues at the house used plates, alcohol bottles,an opened pack of condoms and pornographic material. They are matching two sets of fingerprints with those of Iyers acquaintances. It seems the haemorrhaging took place inside his head,at the crown. However,we have not found any external marks that could show where he was struck. DCP Sanjay Mohite said. The post mortem has not shown any sign of sexual intercourse. We are probing the possibility that the cord around his neck might have been a sexual experiment. The cord is not strong enough to kill anyone, but there were marks on his throat.
Another mystery is regarding the victim himself. It seems he kept so much to himself that even the people working closely with him did not know his full name. The guard at the building has told us the last time Iyer was seen was on Saturday, around midnight, when he came home in a taxi. He had a holiday on Saturday,so we dont know where came from that late. He did not seem to have any close friends and was not known to socialise much with anyone at work or in his locality, Mohite added.
A police officer said the used plates suggest Iyer had dinner with some people that night. We found some liquor bottles in his cupboard and some pornographic videos in his house, besides cassettes of devotional regional songs and a stack of postcard-sized photographs of male models. A pack of condoms, with two condoms taken out,was found near a table in the room, he added. The police have questioned around 20 people and are focusing on three colleagues who were closer to Iyer than others.
