Trinamool Congress members clashed with police in Keshpur in East Midnapore on Tuesday after setting the CPM zonal party office on fire and ransacking the building. Four policemen, including the officer-in-charge of Anandapur police station, and several Trinamool supporters were injured in the clash.

A day after a 17-year-old Trinamool supporter,Sheikh Samayet Ali,was killed in neighbouring Panchami village, scores of party workers attacked Jamshed Ali Bhavan, the CPM office, blaming the Marxists for the death. When the police intervened, the mob started pelting stones and bricks on them. The police had to resort to lathicharge that led to further violence.

Police however, said that Ali died during a clash between two factions of the Trinamool. “On Monday,a clash broke out between two groups of Trinamool. Ali was shot dead and three others received bullet injuries in the clash,” said a senior police officer.

A senior Trinamool leader,on condition of anonymity, admitted that Ali’s death was a result of intra-party factionalism. “There are more than four factions of the Trinamool in the area. They have divided over profit sharing and area capturing. We have communicated this situation to our party leadership,” the Trinamool leader said.

Interestingly, the clash took place on a day when Director General of Police N Mukherjee and Home Secretary G D Gautama were holding a high-level meeting in Midnapore in the wake of Maoist attacks in Junglemahal.
