Cops go shopping for mobile cargo scanner

When it comes to the security of the VVIPs in the Capital, the Delhi Police takes no chances.

When it comes to the security of the VVIPs in the Capital, the Delhi Police takes no chances. In order to avoid any security glitch, police have decided to buy a mobile cargo scanner, which they can transport easily to any venue.

At present, police rely on the scanners hired by organisers of a particular event for search and frisking.

“We have decided to buy the mobile scanner so that we do not have to rely on any outside agency for the mandatory frisking whenever the VIPs are attending any function in the city,” said Taj Hasan,Joint Commissioner of Police (Security).

The scanner can be fitted into an SUV for transportation.

“All we will have to do is to install this scanner at the entry point and ask the visitors to put their belongings, like wallets and mobile phones, through it. This will save time and eradicate the possibility of human error,” said a senior police officer.

“The equipment will be an independently operated unit. It will perform non-intrusive inspection of packed cargo. It would also determine the presence of explosives, weapons, drugs, organic compounds, flammable gases, liquids and solids, poisonous gasses, spontaneous combustible and other contraband or dangerous items,” said the officer.

Police said there are occasions when dignitaries object to manual search of their wallets and bags.

“At times they refuse to comply with the security provisions; the scanners would be of help then. We can carry it anywhere as per our convenience and can be sure about the security arrangements,” said the officer.

Police said the scanner would be useful when the VIPs visit places that have huge crowds.
