The police have started looking for chassis numbers and engine registration in order to detect vehicle thefts,as many vehicle owners do not possess the papers. However, the exercise is becoming difficult for the police,as they are understaffed.
In many cases, the vehicle owners do not carry proper documents and feel that they can evade checking. Therefore,we are checking the chassis number and registration numbers of the engines, which cannot be altered, said Inspector L B Parmar of Raopura police.
He added that the decision was taken before the Lok Sabha polls to check on the increasing number of vehicle thefts in the city.
However,at various check posts, policemen are finding it increasingly difficult to conduct the drive,as there are only two constables per check post on many occasions.
A policeman near Fatehpura said on condition of anonymity that sometimes, drivers simply speed off when they bend to check the chassis number, especially in the case of two wheelers.
There should be at least one more person to check on the vehicles,as one constable has to record the details, while the other is checking them. Vehicle owners, when they realise that it might not match with the licence, drive off and we have to stand helpless, he added.
